Somebody made a phone call or wrote a letter that got you in the room. Find out who and thank them.

Opportunities usually arrive looking like your own achievement, and underneath most of them is somebody who said a word on your behalf. That person often never mentions it, either because it seemed small or because they did not want it to change how you understood the win. The help is real whether or not you ever hear about it.

Ask how you actually got the chance, plainly, of whoever would know. Thank the person directly when you find them, without turning it into a diminishment of your own work. Then do the same for someone else, which is the only real way that favor gets repaid.
