Confess before they find it. Getting caught turns a mistake into a scandal.

Whoever tells the story first sets its shape. Brought forward by you, it is a mistake with context and an apology attached. Uncovered by somebody else, the same facts arrive with concealment wrapped around them, and the concealment becomes the main event while the original thing turns into evidence.

If something is hidden, work out who most needs to hear it and go this week. Lead with the fact rather than the reasons, and say what you plan to do about it. The conversation is bad for twenty minutes, which is a far better deal than the alternative.
