A complicated explanation is not automatically a sophisticated one.

Complexity can indicate depth or it can indicate that a simple idea has been dressed up, or that a weak one is being protected by being made hard to examine. Difficulty of understanding is not evidence of quality, and a great deal of impressive-sounding material collapses the moment someone asks for it in plain language.

Ask for the plain version. If someone cannot give you one, that may be because the subject genuinely resists it, and it may be because there is less here than the vocabulary suggests. Apply the same test to your own explanations, where it is considerably more uncomfortable.
