Your name on the honor roll fades. Your name in someone’s “who helped me” story doesn’t.

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

Official lists are kept by institutions, which means they get filed and nobody reads them again. A story somebody tells about how they got through something is kept by a person, and people retell their own stories for decades. That is the whole difference in durability: one is a record, the other is in active use.

You cannot engineer your way into somebody’s story, though you can be the sort of person who ends up in one. Help somebody with something hard for them and easy for you this week, and do not mention it afterwards.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Who would name you if asked who helped them most?
