Titles follow behaviour, they do not create it. If people already turn to you, it is because of a long run of unremarkable acts: you carried the kit, you noticed who was struggling, you did the dull job unasked, and a badge only acknowledges a fact that existed beforehand. Handing authority to somebody with none of that history does not work, as most of us have watched happen. The job gets done before the announcement.
So stop waiting to be appointed. Do the useful invisible thing this week. If the badge never comes, you will hold the actual position anyway.
Have you done the thankless jobs before anyone gave you a title?
Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
