Ambition is wanting a bigger life. Maturity is noticing who that life would cost.

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

Wanting more is not the problem; wanting more without doing the arithmetic is. Every bigger version of your life has a bill attached, and somebody else often pays part of it: a sibling who sees less of you, a friend who stops getting called, a parent covering what you dropped. Growing up partly means being able to see that bill before it arrives rather than afterwards.

Look at whatever you are chasing hardest right now and list who else it touches. Then ask whether any of them know. One honest sentence this week, or one small adjustment, usually keeps the cost from quietly piling up.
