The world contains too much randomness for every outcome to be a moral judgment.

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

Not everything that happens is deserved. There is far more noise in the world than there is justice, and the impulse to read outcomes as verdicts turns illness, loss, and bad timing into accusations. That impulse feels like moral seriousness, but it mostly produces cruelty toward others and quiet self-blame in private.

When something painful happens to you or to someone near you, resist the search for what it means about the person. Ask instead what would actually help now. That question has answers; the other one usually does not.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Whose hardship have you quietly assumed they earned?
