You can take a year to figure it out. Just make sure it’s a year of trying things and not a year of scrolling about them.

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

A year out is perfectly reasonable, and what fills it decides whether it was any use. A year of attempting things leaves you with information, a few contacts and a shorter list of options. A year of reading about them leaves you roughly where you were, except older and more convinced that everything is complicated. The difference between the two is contact with reality.

Set a small quota for the next few months: three things genuinely attempted rather than researched. A shift in a trade, a short course, a job you are curious about. Research is for choosing what to try next.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

If you took a year off, what would you try first?
