You’ll outgrow some friends as you grow. Do it without turning them into the villain.

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

Drifting apart is usually nobody’s fault, and it is uncomfortable, and the quickest way to kill the discomfort is to decide the other person was bad. That story is tidy and untrue, and it costs you the memory of a friendship that was once genuinely good. Growing in different directions is simply a thing that happens. Not everything that ends requires somebody to blame.

If you are drifting from somebody, let it be quiet rather than dramatic. No speech, no last word, no account of their faults handed round to other people. Leave the door unlocked, because people come back more often than you expect.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Which old friend have you grown apart from without blaming them?
