It’s easier to get famous than to get good, and easier to stay good than to stay famous.

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

Attention and ability run on different clocks. Attention can arrive in a week and leave as fast, because it depends on other people’s interest, which you do not control. Ability takes much longer to acquire and then mostly stays, because it lives in you. That is why chasing the quick one is a worse bet than it looks.

Ask which of the two you are working on, by looking honestly at where your hours go. If most of them go to being seen, move some to getting better. The skill will still be there in ten years, whether or not anyone is watching.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Would you rather be briefly known or quietly excellent for decades?
