A choice made to impress someone usually gets paid for by you alone.

Audiences do not share the bill. The person you were trying to impress gets a moment of being impressed and then goes on with their evening, while you keep the cost: the money, the injury, the course you did not want. They were never going to be involved in the consequence.

Before something expensive, ask whether you would still want it if the person you are thinking of never found out. If the answer is no, that is the whole answer. Spend the money and the risk on things that stay yours afterwards.
