Ask whether a choice can be undone. If it can, decide faster. If it can’t, slow down.

RESILIENCE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Reversibility is the most useful question you can ask about a decision and almost nobody asks it. Choices you can unwind do not need long deliberation, because getting one wrong costs you the price of changing your mind. Choices you cannot unwind deserve all the slowness you can give them. Treating both the same way wastes time on one and risk on the other.

Sort what is in front of you now by that single test. Decide the reversible things today and stop circling them. For anything permanent, give it a week, say the worst case out loud, and ask someone with nothing to gain from your answer.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Is the thing you are deciding reversible or permanent?
