The bill for a habit doesn’t come at once. It comes in installments you barely notice.

RESILIENCE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Habits are rarely priced in a way you notice. Each instance is small enough to be beneath consideration, and the cost accumulates somewhere you are not looking: money, sleep, fitness, attention, the slow erosion of something you used to be able to do. There is no single moment where it becomes expensive. It simply turns out to have been.

Pick the habit you suspect and work out its real annual total, in money and in hours. Then change its shape rather than swearing off it, since smaller or less often survives better than never. Check back in a month and look at the total again.
