An apology that comes with a deadline for forgiveness isn’t an apology. It’s an invoice.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Attaching a timetable to somebody else’s forgiveness turns the whole thing back into something about you. The real version hands over an account of what you did and then stops, leaving them free to take as long as they take, including longer than you find comfortable. Pressing for a response is asking to be let off rather than offering repair. Impatience gives away what the apology was for.

When you say sorry, finish with silence rather than a question. If they are not ready, say that is fine and mean it. Then keep behaving differently whether or not anybody has told you it counted.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Have you ever expected to be forgiven on your own schedule?
