Ask the new coworker where they worked before. One question turns “the new guy” into a person.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

New people get treated as a role until somebody gives them a history. Everybody addresses the function rather than the person, and the new one spends weeks being slightly invisible while learning to be useful. Asking about a previous job hands them something to be besides new, and it usually turns up something you did not expect. One question moves somebody out of that category.

Find the newest person on your shift and ask where they worked before, or what they are studying. Use their name while you do it. Then introduce them to one other person, by name.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What could you ask the newest person on your team?
