If you answer “what’s wrong?” with “nothing,” don’t be surprised when nobody can help.

Saying nothing when somebody asks is usually a test, and an unfair one. Part of you wants them to push past it and prove they really want to know, but most people take the answer at face value and go, which is what you just asked them to do. The wish stays private and the help never arrives.
Next time that word is halfway out, try naming one true piece instead. Telling someone you had a rough day and would rather not get into it is still an answer. It gives them something to hold while you decide how much to say.
Who asked what was wrong while you were deciding not to say?
