A translation app gets you the words. It can’t get you the respect that comes from trying.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

An app can hand you the words and nothing else. What the other person responds to is the visible effort, the willingness to be clumsy out loud in their language, because that says they were worth some discomfort to you. A flawless phrase read off a screen says nothing about you at all.

Learn the four or five phrases you will actually use, hello and thank you and sorry among them, then say them badly on purpose. Keep the app for the hard parts. People meet you halfway far more often than you expect, and they remember that you tried.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Where would your awkward attempt mean more than a perfect translation?
