Translating for your family means picking words for two people at once. That’s harder than any vocab test.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Translating for your parents puts you between two people who need different things. You are choosing words that are accurate for the clerk and bearable for your mother, in real time, while also being the kid in the room, which is more than any vocabulary test asks of anybody. Doing it well is a skill nobody grades.

Give yourself credit for it instead of treating it as ordinary, because it is not. Ask for a pause when you need one, since nobody should expect simultaneous work from a teenager. And if it has started to feel heavy, say so to somebody, because carrying it alone is the part that wears.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Where have you stood between two people, choosing words for both?
