A second language gets you jobs, sure. It also gets you jokes, songs and friends you’d never have met.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

The practical case is the one adults lead with, and it undersells the thing badly. A language is a door into rooms full of people, and what waits in there is humour that does not translate, music nobody would have handed you, and friends who were otherwise going to stay strangers. The job is a side effect.

Whatever language you are studying, find something in it made for enjoyment rather than practice: a comedy, a playlist, a channel about something you like. Twenty minutes of that beats an hour of drills. If someone near you speaks it, ask them to talk to you in it.
