“Sure” can mean yes, or it can mean “fine, but you’ll hear about this later.” Your voice gives it away.

Agreement with a flat delivery is not agreement, and everyone involved knows it. You get to avoid the disagreement in the moment and still keep the grievance, which is why resentment builds in relationships where nobody technically argued. The other person hears the real answer and either pretends not to, or stops asking you anything.

Catch yourself this week when you say yes to something you are not actually willing to do. Either say no, or say yes and drop the account you were keeping. If someone agrees with you in that voice, ask once whether they genuinely mean it.
