“Teach me” opens more doors with older people than “I already know” ever will.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

People who have done something for thirty years mostly want it to be passed on, and very few get asked. Claiming you already know closes the door politely and leaves you with exactly what you had, while admitting you do not invites somebody to hand over the shortcuts they learned the slow way. The small loss of face is the entire price.

Pick one thing an older relative or a coworker is good at and ask to be shown rather than told. Let them take longer than necessary. You will usually get more than the skill, since people talk while their hands are busy.
