Saying “I’ll go first” in a room full of people who don’t want to is a small form of leadership.
LEADERSHIP
A room where nobody wants to begin is stuck, and everyone in it is waiting for somebody to absorb the cost of being first. Taking that on has little to do with being the best in the room. It is about being the one who makes the thing start, which also lowers the bar for whoever goes second. Groups remember who ended the silence.
Volunteer early rather than hoping to be skipped, since going first means less waiting and a lower standard to beat. Keep it short so you are not also the longest. Do it in a small room before you try it in a big one.
When could you volunteer while the room stares at the floor?
Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
