Comedy has a rule about punching up instead of down. Good creative work usually aims at power, not at the weak.

CREATIVITY

WHAT THIS MEANS

Who a joke targets decides what it does in the room. Aimed at power, it says something many people were already thinking and could not say, and it takes a small risk on their behalf. Aimed downwards, it only repeats what the weaker person already hears, and the laugh is agreement rather than recognition. The second kind is easier, which is why it is so common.

Before you use a line, ask who ends up smaller when people laugh. If the answer is the person with the least power in the situation, find another target, including yourself. Punching up usually takes a better joke.
