The world has enough copies. It’s short on people who made something weird and stood behind it.

Copies are safe and abundant, since imitation gives you a known result and a ready audience. What is scarce is making something odd and then not backing away from it when people react, because the retreat is what usually happens: the shrug, the joke at your own expense, the quick explanation that you were not being serious. Standing behind the work is the rarer half. Anyone can be strange for an afternoon.

Make the thing you suspect is too much and put your name on it. When somebody asks, describe it plainly instead of apologising. Decide now that you will not take it down in the first hour.
