A person can earn more and become poorer in available attention.

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

Higher income frequently comes attached to more demands on your attention, and attention is the harder currency. More responsibility, more people who need something, more decisions carried home. You can be considerably better paid and have noticeably less of yourself left at the end of a day.

When considering a step up, ask what it costs in attention rather than hours. Hours can be scheduled. Attention cannot, and its depletion is what people usually mean when they say they feel poorer despite earning more.
