Making something that only a few people love beats making something everyone shrugs at.

Mild approval from many people is a worse outcome than strong attachment from few, even though it looks better on a chart. Work engineered to offend nobody has had the distinctive parts removed, which is exactly what people would have loved it for. Nobody remembers the thing they did not mind.

Look at your last few pieces and ask whether you sanded anything off to widen the appeal. Put one of those edges back into the next one. Then judge the result by how strongly a few people respond rather than how many people glance.
