Specific beats general. “My dad’s blue Corolla” hits harder than “a car” every time.

Detail is what makes somebody believe you were there. A car is a category, while a dented blue Corolla with a cracked dash is an object with a smell, a sound and a year attached, and only the second gives a listener something to see. Generality feels safer because it includes everybody, and in practice it lands on nobody. Precision is the whole trick, and it costs nothing.
Go through something you have written and replace three general nouns with exact ones. Use real names, colours and places where you can. Read both versions to someone and watch where they nod.
