Onion skinning lets animators see the last frame while drawing the next. Look back before you take the next step.

CREATIVITY

WHAT THIS MEANS

Continuity needs the previous step held in view while you make the next one. Animators keep a ghost of the last drawing visible because motion is a relationship between frames rather than a property of any single one, and the same is true of a chapter, an album or a term of practice. Working only on today’s piece produces work that does not connect. Looking back is part of moving forward.

Before you start the next thing, spend ten minutes with the last one in front of you. Ask what it was reaching for and never finished. Let the new piece answer it.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What would looking back one step change about your next?
