Wood remembers every tool mark. Slow down on the pieces people will touch.

CREATIVITY

WHAT THIS MEANS

Materials hold a record of how you treated them. A surface keeps the tear-out, the gouge and the hurried pass, and the places people put their hands are exactly where that history gets noticed, over and over, long after you have forgotten the afternoon. Care is therefore unevenly valuable, concentrated where contact happens. Knowing where to slow down is part of the craft.

Identify the parts of your project somebody will touch, read first, or hear repeatedly. Give those disproportionate attention. Let the hidden parts be merely sound.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Where will people actually put their hands on your work?
