Visible effort is easy to perform and easy to reward, which is why so much of it accumulates in organisations and in personal habits. Long hours, fast replies, the look of being under pressure, none of these are the point, and all of them get noticed more than a quiet piece of work that actually changed something.

Ask what you would be judged on if nobody could see how hard you worked, only what existed at the end. Then spend your week on that, and let the performance go.
