On a new job, the person who asks “how do you want this done?” beats the person who guesses confidently.
RESILIENCE
RESILIENCE
Asking how something should be done is a sign of competence, not weakness. New people who guess confidently produce work that has to be redone, and the guessing is usually about not wanting to look inexperienced, which is the one thing nobody expects you to hide. A question costs ten seconds. Undoing a confident mistake costs somebody an afternoon.
Ask before you start the next unfamiliar task, and ask precisely: how do you want this, and how will I know it is right. Write the answer down. You only get to ask like a newcomer for a little while, so use it.
When did guessing confidently cost you more than asking?
