The difference between a hobby and a skill is what you do on the days it isn’t fun.

RESILIENCE

WHAT THIS MEANS

What separates a pastime from a skill is attendance on the bad days. Everybody turns up when it is enjoyable, and enjoyment is unreliable, so working only when the mood is right leaves you at the mercy of something you do not control. Skills get built out of ordinary sessions where nothing clicks. That is not a punishment, it is simply where most of the time goes.

Go once this week when you do not feel like it, and keep it short. Fifteen minutes counts. Write down the date and nothing at all about how it felt.
