Hard work doesn’t guarantee the win. It just means effort won’t be the reason you lost.

RESILIENCE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Effort is not a payment that buys a result, and pretending otherwise sets you up to feel cheated. What it does buy is a clear conscience about the loss: you get to look back and find the reason somewhere other than your own preparation. That is worth more than it sounds. Losing while knowing you were ready keeps you willing to try again.

Before the next tryout or exam you are nervous about, write down what being fully prepared would look like. Do that list, then let the outcome be the outcome. If it goes badly, read the list again and ask what the loss is actually teaching.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

After your last loss, was effort honestly one of the reasons?
