If you make rules you don’t follow, people learn the real rule is “do whatever you want.”

RESILIENCE

WHAT THIS MEANS

People learn from behavior, not announcements. A rule its author ignores teaches two things at once, and the second lesson, that the stated standard is optional, is the one everybody keeps. This is how groups end up with written rules and an entirely different real code. Whoever sets the rule is also the demonstration of it.

Look at one rule you have set for a group, a sibling or yourself and check whether you keep it. Either follow it from today or change it to something you will actually hold. Say the change out loud, since quietly abandoning it is what caused the problem.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Do you follow the rules you ask others to keep?
