If you only read the Bible for rules, you’ll miss the love story holding them together.

If you only read the Bible for rules, you’ll miss the love story holding them together.
GRATITUDE
Reading anything for the rules alone turns it into a list of demands, which is easy to resent and easy to misquote. Those instructions sit inside a longer story about who is loved and why, and the story is what they are for. Pull them out of it and they become arbitrary. The same thing happens with your parents’ rules.
Next time you open it, read a whole stretch rather than hunting the verse that settles an argument. Ask what the people in it are promised, not only what they are told. A chapter a night is enough to notice the difference.
