The instinct after something goes wrong is to tidy up before letting anyone see it. That instinct keeps people stuck, because the mess is usually too big to handle alone and waiting makes it worse. Help that arrives while the floor is still covered is the only kind that is any use. Nobody needs assistance after the problem is solved.
