Watch little kids play for a few minutes. They’re barely thinking about yesterday or tomorrow. That’s the skill.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Being wholly inside the current moment is something you were born able to do and have slowly trained out of yourself. Watch a six-year-old with a stick and a puddle: no review of yesterday, no planning for later, no running commentary about whether this is a good use of time. That running commentary is the thing that arrived with age. The ability underneath it has not gone anywhere.

Pick one ordinary thing this week and give it your whole attention. Eat without a screen, walk without headphones, play a game without checking anything.
