A train horn heard from your bed at night is a sound you’ll go looking for years later.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Ordinary sounds become home only in retrospect. A freight horn at midnight is background noise now, mildly annoying, completely unremarkable, and in fifteen years it will be the thing that puts a lump in your throat in an unfamiliar town. Whatever is constant where you live is doing that work on you quietly. You do not get to choose which parts stick.

Spend a minute this week listening to where you live. Name three sounds you would not be able to hear anywhere else, and remember that you noticed them.
