When a flood or fire hits a small town, watch how fast people show up with trucks and coffee. That’s home.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Community is mostly invisible until something requires it. Nothing about a quiet town tells you who would turn up with a truck, a chainsaw and twelve cups of coffee at six in the morning, and then the water rises and you find out within an hour. The capacity was there the whole time, unused and unmeasured. An emergency does not create it, it just reveals the inventory.

Make sure you are on that list. When the next thing happens locally, turn up with something practical rather than sympathy, and ask the person in charge what is actually missing.
