The neighbor who let every kid on the block use their pool in July was running a public service.

GRATITUDE
Private generosity frequently does the job of public infrastructure. One family with a pool and an open gate becomes the summer for an entire block of kids, which is not what they bought it for and is what it ended up being. Nobody called it a service, nobody funded it, and it worked. A lot of what made your childhood possible ran on that kind of informal arrangement.
Share whatever you have that others do not: the yard, the car, the console, the table. Thank the people who did it for you while you can.
Whose house was always open to the kids on your street?
Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
