Read the acknowledgments page of a book you love. Even the best writers needed a whole list of people to get there.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Finished work hides the crowd behind it. A book arrives with one name on the cover, which makes it look like one person sat down and produced it. Then there is a page at the back listing editors, early readers, a friend who read nine drafts, somebody who covered the rent. Nothing good is made alone, and most of the help never appears on the front.

Flip to the back of something you admire and read that page properly. Then write your own version for this year, three or four people whose help is inside whatever you have managed. Knowing the names changes how you talk to them.
