A rocking chair on a porch is a machine for doing nothing well. Learn how to use it.

Objects that make rest possible are rare, and a rocking chair is unusually honest about it. It goes nowhere, achieves nothing, and the slight motion is just enough to keep you from feeling like you should be up. That is a design problem solved: it gives idleness a shape so it stops feeling like failure.
Find your version of the chair, the one place where sitting still does not feel like wasting time. Steps, a window ledge, a bench, the end of a bed. Go there for fifteen minutes with no plan, three times this week, and let that be the whole activity.
How bad are you at doing nothing on purpose?
Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
