The first time you pay for your mom’s dinner, you’ll realize how many she paid for.

Paying for somebody else’s meal is informative in a way that reading about prices is not. You hand over your own hours, the figure suddenly has weight, and then the arithmetic runs backwards through every meal that was simply put in front of you. Years of it were invisible because none of it came out of anything you owned. The scale only becomes clear from this side of the table.
The first time you pay for a parent, let yourself do that arithmetic properly. Then say something about it out loud, once. Not an apology, just a sign that you can see the arrangement now.
How many meals have been bought for you without a word?
