A person can be gone and still influence decisions they never lived to see.

Influence outlives access. A person’s standards, their way of handling trouble, a sentence they said once about how to treat people, all keep operating in you long after they are gone. You will make choices in rooms they never entered using judgment they helped build. That is a real form of continuation, even if it is not the one you want.

When a decision is hard, it can help to ask what they would have made of it. Not as a way to hand over responsibility, but as a way of consulting something they left in you. Their part in your life is still in progress.
