A crossing guard stands in sleet so a crowd of distracted kids gets across safely. Wave back.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Somebody stands in bad weather so a crowd of distracted kids gets across a road safely, and the job is built so that nothing happens, which makes it look permanently unnecessary. Work that prevents disasters gets no credit, because the proof of it working is an ordinary morning. The sleet is the real part of it. A wave is about the only thanks the format allows.

Wave back at the crossing guard this week and mean it. Same for anybody whose job is making sure nothing goes wrong. Being noticed is most of what makes a cold shift bearable.
