Reading is so ordinary in your life that it looks like a natural ability rather than something you were taught. It is a key, it opens everything that has ever been written down, and for most of history most people were kept away from it deliberately. You were handed it, probably by several patient adults, before you could appreciate what it was. That is quite a thing to receive.

Use it this week on something nobody assigned you. One book, one long article, chosen entirely by you. Choosing your own reading is the part of the key most people never bother turning.
