Somebody fixed your bike chain instead of telling you to buy a new one. That’s a skill and a kindness.

Fixing something is a decision to spend time instead of money, and usually it is somebody else’s time going into your problem. Replacing is faster and teaches nobody anything, while repairing requires knowing how the thing works and being willing to get your hands dirty for a person who cannot do it yet. The skill and the kindness arrive in the same gesture. Both are worth copying.
Ask whoever fixed it to show you how, instead of doing it for you next time. Then repair one thing this week that you would normally throw away. A chain, a seam, a loose screw.
Who repaired something for you instead of replacing it?
Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
