Gratitude for an earlier version of yourself and obedience to that version are two different things. The person you used to be made choices that fit the information and fear they had at the time, and many of those choices kept you safe. That does not make them a permanent authority. Trouble starts when old rules keep voting on a life they no longer live in.
Pick one rule you follow that you have not examined in years and ask whether it belongs to who you are now or to who you had to be then. Thank it if it served you. Then decide for yourself whether to keep it.
What can you thank an earlier version of yourself for?
