Leaving dishes “to soak” for three days is just assigning them to whoever cracks first.

Soaking is a real technique for about twenty minutes. After that the word is doing something else: it keeps the job officially unfinished rather than abandoned, so nobody has to say they left it. Whoever lives with you ends up doing it, not because they agreed but because they could not stand it any longer, which is a decision you made for them without speaking.
