A good umpire doesn’t fix a bad call by giving the other team one. That’s just two bad calls.

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

The instinct to balance a mistake with an opposite mistake feels like justice and is mostly about your own comfort. Nothing gets handed back to the team that lost out. A second team just gets wronged, and the scoreboard now carries both errors. Evening the ledger and getting it right are two different projects.

When you have been unfair to somebody, correct that thing directly instead of adding a balancing unfairness somewhere else. Say you got it wrong and keep the next call clean. Owing one person an apology is simpler than owing two.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Have you tried evening things out by being unfair twice?
